The body is the most important attribute of
female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Many women are not
completely happy with the size and shape of their body and today women who
are unhappy with their body have many options which include Tummy Tuck.
The tummy tuck or abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure used to
flatten the abdomen by removing excess fat, loose skin or tightening muscles
of abdominal walls,. This procedure can drastically reduce the appearance of
a protruding abdomen. |

Reasons for having Tummy Tuck Surgery include |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• To give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
• To remove excess skin and fat
• Those who want a tighter flatter abdomen
• To restore weakened and seperated muscles in the abdomen area
• To restore a smoother firmer image
• Self esteem
The best candidates are those who are in good physical health, are mentally
and psychologically stable, preferably do not smoke, those who want to
improve their appearance and those who have realistic expectations about the
procedure and the results. Extra reasons may include:
• Men or women who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a large
fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won’t respond to diet or exercise.
• Those women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their
adbominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.
• Loss of skin elasticity in older patients, which frequently occurs with
slight obesity, can also be improved.
Patients who intend to lose a lot of weight should postpone the surgery.
Also, women who plan future pregnancies should wait, as vertical muscles in
the abdomen that are tightened during surgery can separate again during
pregnancy and if you have scarring from previous abdominal surgery, your
doctor may recommend against abdominoplasty or may caution you that scars
could be unusually prominent.
Abdominoplasty can enhance your appearance and your self-confidence, but it
won’t necessarily change your looks to match your ideal, or cause other
people to treat you differently as usually the difference remains unnoticed.
Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations
and discuss them with your surgeon.

Planning

Pre-visit and during consultations the
surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical
conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are
honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are
taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if
you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. The surgeon is
here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed,
possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and
limitations of each as well as details of follow up and after care.
If your fat deposits are limited to the area below the navel you may require
a less complex procedure called a partial abdominoplasty, also known as a
mini tummy tuck. You may, on the other hand, benefit more from partial or
complete abdominoplasty done in conjunction with liposuction to remove fat
deposits from the hips. Or maybe liposuction alone would create the best
result. Your surgeon will help you decide which is best for you. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
Most commonly the surgeon will make an
incision (size dependant on the amount of excess skin to be removed) from
hipbone to hipbone across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area. A
second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. He then
separates the skin from the abodominal wall all the way up to your ribs and
lifts a large skin flap to reveal the vertical muscles in your abdomen and
excess fat and skin are removed by liposuction.. These muscles and tissue
are tightened by pulling them close together and stitching them into their
new position. This gives a firmer abdominal wall, narrows the waistline and
improves appearance. The skin flap is then stretched down and the extra skin
is removed. A new hole is cut for the navel which is then stitched in place.
Finally the incision will be stitched, dressings will be applied and a
temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.
With partial abdominoplasty the incision is much shorter and the navel may
not be moved, although it may be pulled into an unatural shape as the skin
is tightened and stitched. The skin is also only separated between the
incision line and the navel. This skin flap is stretched down, the excess is
removed and the flap is stitched back in place. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
After surgery your abdomen will be swollen
for the first few days and likely to feel some pain and discomfort which can
be controlled by medication. Depending on the extent of surgery you will be
released within a few hours or you may have to stay in hospital for 2-3 days.
You may not be able to stand straight at first but should start walking as
soon as possible.
Surface stitches will be removed in 5-7 days and deeper stitches, with ends
that protrude through the skin, will come out in 2-3 weeks. The dressing on
your incision may be replaced by a support garment.
It may take weeks or months to feel normal again. If you start out in top
physical condition with strong abdominal muscles recovery will be much
faster. Some people return to work after 2 weeks while others take 3 or 4
weeks to rest and recuperate. Excercise will help you heal better. Even
people who have never excercised should begin a program to reduce swelling,
lower the chance of blood clots and tone muscles. Vigorous excercise should
be avoided until you can do it comfortably.
Scars may actually appear to worsen during the first 3-6 months as they heal
but this is normal. Expect it to take up to a year before scars flatten out
and lighten in colour.
The results are permanent but the covering skin will loosen up over time.
If you are looking for a procedure to give you a firmer, tighter and flatter
abdomen then a Tummy Tuck is the answer. Most patients are more than happy
with the end results and often repeat the process. |

Risks and complications of
Tummy Tuck
Surgery is a serious business and not a decision to be taken lightly. There
is always the possibility that something may go wrong. No absolute
guarantees can be given. The surgeon will explain to you procedure, the
risks; alternatives and potential complications in detail so that you
understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery
Complications of Tummy Tuck surgery, when performed by a qualified surgeon,
are infrequent and normally minor although there is a possibility of
infection or a reaction to the anesthetic. To reduce any risk the surgeons
instructions should be closely followed both before and after surgery.
As with all surgery and procedures there can be side effects. For a few days
you will feel temporary soreness, swelling, bruising, numbness of abdominal
skin, tiredness for a few weeks.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences
