The body is the most
important attribute of female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire.
Many women are not completely happy with the size and shape of their body
and today women who are unhappy with their body have many options which
include Liposuction.
Liposuction is one of the most common surgical procedures performed and is
also known as Suction Lipectomy, Liposculpture or Suction Body Contouring.
It is a surgery to reshape areas of the body by removing unwanted fat
deposits that are resistant to a healthy diet and exercise and is not
intended as an alternative to weight loss. It is neither an effective
treatment for cellulite, it can remove the stubborn fat deposits that don’t
respond to healthy diet and exercise and is not intended as an alternative
to weight loss. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
Tumescent Liposuction is performed by first
injecting a very diluted solution of lidocaine, epinephrine and saline into
the fat. Lidocaine acts as a local anaesthetic while epinephrine makes the
capillaries in the fat constrict while the solution causes the fat tissue to
swell and become firmer. As the capillaries are constricted by the
epinephrine the lidocaine takes a longer amount of time to be absorbed by
the body. This means there is no need for an IV as a result of fluid loss
and the blood loss is minimal.
Ultrasonic Assisted Liposuction involves using a metal probe or paddle to
liquefy the fat by delivering ultrasonic energy making it easier to remove
the fat and leaving other nerves and blood vessels intact.
Power Assisted Liposuction uses a power supply to create a spinning or in
and out movement in the cannula (a small hollow needle). The technique uses
a smaller amount of time to perform the procedure.
The Surgeon will make several incisions into the part of body requiring
liposuction. He will then inject tumescent fluid and using a cannula,
suction the excess body tissue. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
After surgery the patient will be discharged
in 48 hours and need to start walking to reduce swelling and prevent blood
clots. The patient may need to wear special support garments for a few days.
She can return to work after 2 weeks with more strenuous activity after 4-6
weeks. Most of the swelling and bruising will go in 6 weeks but some cases
may need up to a few months.
Results will be more apparent after 4-6 weeks when the swelling subsides and
the full effect of a liposuction procedure can be seen up to many months
later as the tunnels collapse. Any scars are minimal and are hidden with
time.
The results are permanent as long as you keep your weight stable. If you
gain weight after liposuction it will tend to show in those areas not
suctioned where the fat cells will continue to expand.
If you are looking for a procedure to give you a smooth, healthy and more
youthful appearance then Liposuction is the answer. Most patients are more
than happy with the end results and often repeat the process. |

Risks and complications of Liposuction.
Surgery is a serious business
and not a decision to be taken lightly. There is always the possibility that
something may go wrong. No absolute guarantees can be given. The surgeon
will explain to you procedure, the risks; alternatives and potential
complications in detail so that you understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery
Complications of Liposuction surgery, when performed by a qualified surgeon,
are infrequent and normally minor although there is a possibility of
infection or a reaction to the anaesthetic. To reduce any risk the surgeons
instructions should be closely followed both before and after surgery.
As with all surgery there are some risks to liposuction.
There may be temporary pain, swelling, bruising and soreness for a few days.
Seromas, hematomas, focal skin necrosis discolouration of the
skin, fainting during or after surgery, and numbness
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences.
