The eyes are one of the most important
attributes of female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Many
women are not completely happy with the folds and wrinkles around their eyes
and today women who are unhappy with their eyes have many options which
include Eyelift surgery.
The normal ageing process and often heredity plays an important factor
making us look older than we are. The stretching of the eyelid skin
resulting in excess folds and wrinkles, sagging of the fat around the eye
itself appears as bulges in the upper and lower lids. Sometimes, even after
a great nights sleep, it can be hard to feel alive and vibrant when those
tired, drooping eyes look back at you from the mirror. Eyelid surgery will
help to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower lids to give a
rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of the eyes giving a more
rested and alert look.
Although Eyelift surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags
below your eyes, it cannot remove crow’s feet lines, or eradicate all eyelid
creases. Any attempt to do so would invariably require excessive tensioning
of the skin, which would result in a downward pulled or staring appearance
of the eyelid. Nor does it improve or lift sagging eyebrows. Procedures such
as laser skin resurfacing (for lines and wrinkles) and the Brow lift (for
sagging eyebrows) are designed for these purposes. |

Reasons for having Eye Lift include |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• To give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
• To correct bags under the eyes
• To correct droopiness of the lower eyelids, showing white below the iris (coloured
portion of the eye)
• To correct excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
• To correct loose or saggy skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural
contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
• To reduce puffy appearance that gives a tired appearance
The best candidates are those who are in good physical health, are mentally
and psychologically stable, preferably do not smoke, those who want to
improve their appearance and those who have realistic expectations about the
procedure and the results. Extra reasons may include:
• Most are 35 years of age or earlier if droopy eyelids run in the family.
• Are looking for a more alert and rejuvenated appearance.
Please be sure to tell your surgeon if you have any of the following medical
conditions:
Eye disease such as
• Glaucoma
• Dry eye
• Detached retina
• A thyroid disorder such as Graves disease or an under or overactive
thyroid |

Pre-visit and during consultations the
surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical
conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are
honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are
taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if
you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. The surgeon is
here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed,
possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and
limitations of each as well as details of follow up and after care. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
The incisions for eyelid surgery are made in
order that scars will be concealed within the natural contour of the eyelid
region. In the upper eyelid area an incision will generally be made 1 cm
above the eyelashes, the incisions may extend into the crow’s feet or
laughter lines at the outer corners of the eyes repositioning of the fat
deposits, tightening of the muscle and tissue the excess skin and muscle is
trimmed from the upper eyelids together with any fat. The incisions are then
closed with very fine stitches. For the lower eyelid surgery often an
incision is hidden just below the lower lashes, excess fat can be removed,
muscles and tissue tightened and repositioned. If the problem is mainly
prominent lower bags without excessively loose skin, a Transconjuctival
Blepharoplasty may be performed. In this procedure the incision is made
inside your lower eyelid leaving no visible scars.
Alternatively, when loose skin needs to be trimmed, the incision starts
underneath the eyelashes and extends 1cm or so outwards into the crows feet
area. The skin is then lifted upwards and outwards, gently tensioning the
area and overlapping skin removed.
Eyelid surgery can also be performed by laser using local anaesthetic. An
initial incision made by the lasers beam, seals blood vessels to provide
better visualization for the surgeon, with less bruising and quicker
recovery for the patient. The fatty deposits are removed and the incisions
are closed using tiny stitches. The stitches are removed after 5 or 6 days.
Since the laser seals blood vessels as it touches them, there is less
bleeding swelling and bruising than with conventional eyelid surgery. Laser
surgery also allows a more precise and rapid surgery. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
After surgery the eye area will be bruised
for about 2 weeks. Patients should keep their head elevated and apply cold
compresses periodically to the eyelids. Initially a ‘tight’ sensation may be
felt around the eye area and some mild discomfort which can be controlled
with oral medication. Vision may continue for be blurred for a few days or
longer. Eyes may be sensitive to light. You may experience excess tearing or
dryness. Eyedrops may be recommended to help relieve burning or itching.
Dark glasses and an eyeblock may be recommended for wear for a couple of
weeks to protect the eyes and eye area from the sun and wind irritation. You
will be able to watch TV after 2-3 days and most people feel ready to go
public in a week-10 days. Within the first week of surgery stitches will be
removed after which makeup can be worn and the patient may feel ready to
return to work although vision may still be slightly blurry which could make
reading or other paperwork more difficult
Healing is a gradual process and final results will appear within several
weeks but may take up to 6 months for final incision lines to fully refine.
Contact lenses should not be worn for up to 2 weeks. The results will be
long lasting and may be repeated in about 10 years.
Any hairline scars which follow the natural contour of the eyelids usually
fade in about 2 months.
The results of eyelid surgery are long lasting but they may be affected by
heredity and lifestyle factors. Removal of fat from your eyelids, which is
usually the cause of puffiness and bags, is permanent, and these conditions
generally will not recur. The skin continues to age, however, and skin
laxity along the fine wrinkling of the eyelid area may at some point, return.
Sometimes loss of tone in the forehead causes additional sagging of the
eyebrows which mimics a recurrence of drooping upper eyelids. If this
happens, correction may require a forehead lift or a secondary eyelid
procedure.
If you are looking for a brighter look and to restore a more youthful
appearance to your face then Eyelift surgery may be for you. |

Risks and complications of
Eyelift / Eyelid Surgery
Surgery is a serious business and not a decision to be taken lightly. There
is always the possibility that something may go wrong. No absolute
guarantees can be given. The surgeon will explain to you procedure, the
risks; alternatives and potential complications in detail so that you
understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery.
Complications of eyelid surgery, when performed by a qualified Surgeon, are
infrequent and normally minor although there is a possibility of infection
or a reaction to the anaesthetic. To reduce any risk the surgeons
instructions should be closely followed both before and after surgery.
A few medical conditions make blepharoplasty more risky. They include
thyroid problems such as hyperthyroidism or Graves’ disease, dry eye or lack
of sufficient tears, high blood pressure or other circulatory disorders,
cardiovascular disease and diabetes. A detached retina or glaucoma is also
reason for caution, check with an opthalmologist before surgery.
The minor complications that may follow are double or blurred vision for a
few days, temporary swelling at the corner of the eyelids and a slight
asymmetry in healing or scarring. Tiny whiteheads may appear after your
stitches are taken out which the surgeon can remove with a very fine needle.
Some patients may have difficulty closing their eyes when they sleep. In
some cases this condition may be permanent. Another very rare complication
is ectropion – a pulling down of the lower lids. In this case further
surgery may be required.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences
