The face is one of the most important
attributes of female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Many
women are not completely happy with the lines and wrinkles of the forehead
and today women who are unhappy with their forehead have many options which
include Brow Lift.
Browlift surgery (Forehead lift) is now one of the top cosmetic procedures
worldwide as nothing defines aging more than “tired eyes”. Eyes are one of
the trademarks of facial beauty, they are used by all to judge appearance,
attitude and state of mind. In many cultures and situations they are the
first and last feature to be looked upon. With age facial features sag, from
lines deepen with stress and over activity of the muscles of facial
animation, trauma and nerve injury can also be a cause, a brow lift (forehead
lift) helps reverse the trend of gravity, replacing the facial features of
the upper third of the face into their more youthful positions.
Forehead muscle hyperactivity can cause three problems:
• horizontal lines
• glabellar lines (forehead region between the eyebrows)
• brow ptosis (drooping brow)
Muscles that animate the forehead can deepen overlapping skin folds. The
frontal muscles lift the eyebrows and result in horizontal (transverse)
lines of the forehead. Vertical lines in the forehead region between the
eyes (glabellar region) are from the corrugator muscles. Horizontal wrinkles
in this region are from the procerus muscles. The corrugator and procerus
muscles depress and move the eyebrows together. To see what a forehead lift
may offer, stand in front of a mirror. Place your hands on the outer edges
of the eyes above the brows. Gently pull the skin up to raise the eyebrows
and forehead. This is a rough approximation of what a brow lift has to offer! |

Reasons for having Browlift
Surgery include |
 |
|
| |
|
• to increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• to give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
• to correct low or sagging eyebrows that may result in a tired or sad
appearance
• to correct deep horizontal lines in the forehead
• to correct frown lines or vertical furrows between the eyebrows across the
top of the nose which may make you look angry and upset
• to correct lateral eyelid hooding
• to give a more alert and rested appearance
The best candidates for a forehead lift are those who are in good physical
health, are mentally and psychologically stable, preferably do not smoke,
those who want to improve their appearance and those who have realist
expectations about the procedure and the results. Extra reasons may include:
• are in the 40-60 age range
• with inherited conditions such as a low heavy brow and furrowed lines
above the nose
• those who want to restore a more alert, youthful, refreshed look
• bald patients or those with a receding hairline may still be good
candidates. The incision lines may change in location to hide the scars on a
boney contour and the thin skin on the scalp heals well |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
There are various surgical techniques used to
perform a browlift (forehead lift) and the one used will depend on such
things as the position of the eyebrows, the amount of excess upper eyelid
skin and the amount and height of the hairline.
The classic forehead lift, an incision is made that starts at ear
level and runs across the top of the forehead and down the other side of the
head, the incision is usually made well behind the hairline so that the scar
will not be visible. Working through the incision the skin, the forehead is
carefully lifted so that the underlying tissue can be removed and the
muscles can be altered or released. The eyebrows may also be elevated and
excess skin at the incision point will be trimmed away to help create a
smoother and more youthful appearance. The incision is then closed with
stitches or clips. The surgeon may choose to cover the incision with gauze
padding and wrap the head in an elastic bandage or the incision may be left
undressed
If the hairline is high or receding, the patient may still be suitable for
forehead lift, the incision may be placed just at the hairline to avoid
adding even more height to the forehead. By wearing your hair down on the
forehead most scars become relatively inconspicuous. . In patients who are
bald or losing hair, a mid scalp incision that follows the natural pattern
of the skull bone is sometimes recommended so that the resulting scar
follows the natural junction of 2 bones in the skull and is less conspicuous.
The endoscopic forehead lift requires the same preparation steps as
the classic forehead lift however, instead of making one long incision the
surgeon will make 3 4 or 5 short incisions, each less than an inch in length.
An endoscope, which is a pencil like camera device connected to a television
monitor, is inserted through one of the incisions allowing the surgeon to
have a clear view of the muscles and tissues beneath the skin. Using another
instrument inserted through a different incision, the forehead skin is
lifted and the muscles and underlying tissues are removed or altered to
produce a smoother appearance. The eyebrows may also be lifted and secured
into their higher position by sutures beneath the skins surface or by
temporary fixation screws placed behind
the hairline. When finished the scalp incisions will be closed with stitches
or clips and the area will be washed. Gauze and an elastic bandage may also
be used. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
Classic forehead lift patients may experience
some numbness and temporary discomfort around the incision which can be
controlled by medication. Your head should be kept elevated for 2-3 days
after surgery to reduce swelling. Swelling may also affect the cheeks and
eyes but should disappear in a week or more. As the nerves heal numbness on
the top of the scalp may be replaced by itching and these sensations may
take as long as 6 months to fully disappear. Bandages will be removed within
1-2 days of surgery and stitches or clips within 2 weeks of surgery often in
2 stages
Some of the hair around the incision may fall out and temporarily be a bit
thinner. Normal growth will usually resume within a few weeks or months.
Permanent hair loss is rare.
Endoscopic forehead lift patients may experience some numbness, incision
discomfort and mild swelling. Incision site pain is usually minimal.
Endoscopic forehead lift patients usually experience less of the itching
sensation felt by patients who have had the classic forehead lift. Bandages
will be removed within 1-2 days of surgery and stitches or staples within 1
week.
Most patients are moving around in a day or 2 after surgery but not fully
resume normal activities for up to 2 weeks. After the bandage is removed
within 2 days hair can be shampooed and showers taken, make up can be worn
after 10 days. Most patients are back to work in a week to 10 days but
endoscopic patients may feel ready to return sooner. Strenuous physical
activity should be limited for several weeks including jogging, bending,
heavy housework, sex or any other activity that increases your blood
pressure. Prolonged exposure to sun or heat should be limited for several
months.
Within 2 weeks you will have an idea of how you will look, most of the
visible signs of surgery should fade within about 3 weeks. Minor swelling
and bruising can be concealed with camouflage makeup and cosmetics can be
worn after 1 week. The results are semı permanent and last for 5 to 10 years.
If you are looking for a more youthful and rested appearance that will alter
the way you look quite dramatically by minimizing the signs of aging then
Browlift surgery may be for you |

Risks and complications of
Brow Lift (Forehead Lift)
Surgery is a serious business and not a decision to be taken lightly. There
is always the possibility that something may go wrong. No absolute
guarantees can be given. The surgeon will explain to you procedure, the
risks; alternatives and potential complications in detail so that you
understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery.
Complications of Browlift surgery, when performed by a qualified surgeon,
are infrequent and normally minor although there is a possibility of
infection or a reaction to the anaesthetic. To reduce any risk the surgeons
instructions should be closely followed both before and after surgery
In rare cases the nerves that control eyebrow movement may be injured on one
or both sides, resulting in a loss of ability to raise the eyebrows or
wrinkle the forehead. Additional surgery may be required to correct the
problem.
Formation of a broad scar is also a rare complication. This may be treated
surgically by removing the wide scar tissue so a new thinner scar may result.
Also, in some patients, hair loss may occur along the scar edges. Loss of
sensation along or just beyond the incision line is common especially with
the classic forehead lift procedure. It is usually temporary but may be
permanent in some patients.
Infection and bleeding are very rare but are possibilities.
If a complication should occur during an endoscopic forehead lift the
surgeon may have to abandon the endoscopic approach and switch to the
conventional open procedure. To date such complications are rare and you can
reduce any risks by closely following the surgeons’ instructions before and
after surgery.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences.
