The breast is one of the most important
attributes of female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Many
women are not completely happy with the size and shape of their breast and
today women who are unhappy with their breasts have many options which
include Nipple Correction.
Inverted nipple correction is a surgical procedure used to make a turned in
nipple to protrude out in the normal way. Many women suffer with nipple and
areola abnormalities such as inverted, enlarged or extended nipples, and
some womens nipples may fold over or even hang down as a result and
development as a side effect of breast feeding, and puffy and enlarged or
discoloured areola. These corrections can assist breast function and nipple
sensation as well as causing a great deal of distress and self consciousness
about self confidence and appearance. Inverted nipples do not affect the
ability to breast feed. |

Reasons for having Nipple
Correction Surgery include |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• To give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
• To increase the size of the nipples/areola
• To reduce the size of the nipples/areola
• To reduce or lengthen the nipples
• To reduce puffiness of the areola
Most cases of inverted nipple are congenital – some people are just born
that way, however, some nipples become inverted after breast feeding when
scar tissue builds in the milk ducts. Nipples that become inverted after
birth are usually caused by one of three things: not enough skin at the base
of the nipple, constricted milk ducts or scarring of the milk ducts due to
breast feeding.
An inverted nipple may appear flat or as a hole or slit-like depression.
Corrective surgery can restore the nipple to a naturally projecting,
beautiful appearance.
Puffy areola (also known as Protuberant Areola) puts a cone like cap on the
breasts that some women can find unattractive. Surgery can be performed to
flatten the areola and beautify the breast.
The best candidates are those who are in good physical health, are mentally
and psychologically stable, preferably do not smoke, thos who want to
improve their appearance and those who have realistic expectations about the
procedure and the results. Extra reasons may include;
• Those women who feel inferior to others.
• Those who feel insecure about their appearance due to the size of the
nipple |

Pre-visit and during consultations the
surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical
conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are
honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are
taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if
you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. The surgeon is
here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed,
possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and
limitations of each as well as details of follow up and after care. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
Nipple correction is a common procedure and
correction of inverted nipples is usually performed under local anesthetic.
The surgeon will make a small incision at the inverted nipple areola
junction to give access to the tethered structure to be released. The
incision will be just below the surface so that the tube, that will become
the nipple, has tissue to fill the skin.
Stitches are then placed to hold the nipple in the correct position until it
heals. Occasionally the milk ducts have to be cut to release the nipple, but
not usually. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
Most patients feel sore and tired for the
first few days and will have slight swelling and bruising which is normal
but should be able to return to work after a couple of days. Although you
can walk about and do very light activities from the next day it is
advisable not to do anything strenuous for 7-10 days.
A light dressing will be put in place which will need to be kept dry for 2
weeks. After 2 weeks the dressing will be removed and the wound lightly
cleaned. The scars will be firm and pink for at least 6 weeks and may remain
the same size for several months although they can take up to 2 years to
fade. Results should be permanent.
Patients expectations need to be realistic but most are pleased with the
outcome and find they gain a feeling of increased self-confidence.
If you are looking for a procedure to give you a more attractive breast
contour then Nipple Correction is the answer. Most patients are more than
happy with the end results and often repeat the process. |

Risks and complications of
Nipple Correction
Surgery is a serious business and not a decision to be taken lightly. There
is always the possibility that something may go wrong. No absolute
guarantees can be given. The surgeon will explain to you procedure, the
risks; alternatives and potential complications in detail so that you
understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery
Complications of Nipple Correction surgery, when performed by a qualified
surgeon, are infrequent and normally minor although there is a possibility
of infection or a reaction to the anesthetic. To reduce any risk the
surgeons instructions should be closely followed both before and after
surgery.
Fortunately, significant complications from nipple corrective surgery are
infrequent. Every year, many people undergo successful nipple surgery and
experience no major problems and are delighted with the results.
Nevertheless, as with any surgery, there are risks. These include re-inversion,
infection, tissue injury, excessive bleeding, and adverse reaction to
anesthesia. The procedure may also result in noticeable scar, permanent
pigment changes, or slightly mismatched nipples. Nipple protrusion with
stimulation may change. If nipple inversion recurs or asymmetry is
significant, a second procedure may be needed. The temporary effects of
inverted nipple surgery can include loss of breast sensation or numbness.
The ability to breast feed after any surgery for inverted nipples cannot be
guaranteed.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences.
