Laser skin resurfacing treatments provide
patients with relief from fine lines and wrinkles by removing damaged outer
layers of skin to reveal those that are softer, smoother and younger looking.
Treatment may be performed to reduce the appearance of fine lines and
wrinkles, acne scars and abnormal pigmentations.
If your face displays telltale signs of age and you would like to correct
these other skin imperfections, a laser skin resurfacing procedure may be
right for you.
Treatment areas include “crows feet” at the edges of the eyes, lines around
the mouth and deep lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth
(the nasolabial fold).
The difference between a chemical peel and a laser treatment is that the
laser gives a greater degree of control over the depth and position of the
resurfacing than is possible with the chemical peel.
Also, in addition to removing the older skin layer from the top, the laser
actually tightens the underlying collagen dermal tissue, which helps smooth
out wrinkles. The laser can be used more effectively for the wrinkles and
skin creases than the chemical peel can.
Virtually any area with an excess of fine wrinkles can be helped, including
the forehead, the eyelids, the cheeks, around the mouth, the hands and to a
lesser degree the neck. |

Reasons for having Facelift
surgery include |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self
confıdence and enhance self ımage
• Desire to look younger
• To produce a more youthful appearance ın a natural way
The best candidates for laser skin resurfacing are patients who are seeking
treatment for discolouration, wrinkles, sun damage, acne marks or other
types of imperfections in skin appearance. Also, patients who have realistic
expectations to what they can achieve.
Laser treatment is not good for darker-skinned individuals because of the
slight discolouration which can occur.

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
The laser works by having the laser’s light
react with the water that is within the deeper layers of the skin (dermis).
The energy released between the light and the water causes the water within
the dermis to heat up, the elevation of the skin’s temperature is only to a
certain temperature that is favorable for collagen contraction. This light
generated heat causes immediate collagen contraction within the demis of the
skin. |

After Surgery and Recovery |

For the first several days, there is weeping
and crusting of the treated area and, during this time, it is very important
to remove any crusts thay may build up on your skin. Most patients find
Vaseline, applied two hourly during the day time, to be the most effective
and soothing topical medication at this stage. For the first two or three
nights after the skin resurfacing procedure, you may find that Vaseline
gauze applied to the treated skin, after it has been first liberally covered
with Vaseline, would be the most soothing dressing.
After about a week, the skin stops weeping, and becomes a bright pink colour,
which then fades to light pink over the following weeks.
It is best not to put on any make up until at least ten days after your skin
has healed. This is because the skin is readily sensitised following a
resurfacing procedure to anything potentially sensitising such as cosmetics
applied to it.
Once the skin has healed, small crusts that have developed can then be
removed gently, using water containing a little white vinegar. This can be
prepared by adding five or six drops of vinegar to a cup of water at a
comfortable temperature as far as the skin is concerned.
After several months, the pink color is gone and the skin color returns
toward normal or may be somewhat lighter than normal.
The best results after a resurfacing procedure are seen 6-10 months after
treatment and are due to new collagen formation under the site of your
wrinkles or acne scarring. Do not feel despondent because you can still see
wrinkles or scarring immediately after your treatment. Your laser resurfaced
skin will usually continue to improve with time up to ten months after the
procedure.
Light exercise and swimming can be resumed in about a week, progressing to
normal physical activity quickly thereafter. However, the light pink
appearance may restrict social activities and return to work for two weeks
or more. Activities should be planned in order to avoid exposure to strong
sunlight, which can leave abnormal discoloration.
The surgeon will advise the patient if there is a need for any pre-treatment.
Patients who have a problem with the cold-sore virus may need pre-treatment
with an anti-virus medication. To facilitate healing, it is preferable for
patients to stop smoking.
It is not possible to recreate young skin or prevent continued aging. The
hands of time continue moving on, and realistic expectations are the key to
success.
If you are looking for a procedure to give you a smooth, healthy and more
youthful appearance then a Laser Facelift is the answer. Most patients are
more than happy with the end results and often repeat the process. |

Risks and Complications of
Facelifts
Surgery is a serious business
and not a decision to be taken lightly. There is always the possibility that
something may go wrong. No absolute guarantees can be given. The surgeon
will explain to you procedure, the risks; alternatives and potential
complications in detail so that you understand what could go wrong.
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery.
As with any medical procedure, there are risks of infection or abnormal
healing. Though infrequent, they do occur, and often antibiotics are not
required.
Patients who are prone to scarring after a minor injury should not undergo
laser skin resurfacing because of the risk of cosmetic damage.
Hyperpigmentation or permanent darkening of the skin is a prominent risk for
darker skin patients seeking to undergo the procedure. Hypopigmentation or
permanent lightening of the skin is also a possibility, but this is less
common.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences
