As we grow older visible signs of ageing
become more evident on our faces due to sun exposure, lifestyle and heredity.
One of the earliest signs of ageing is a loss of facial fullness and the
development of wrinkles and folds (or nasolabial folds. Smoothening of the
wrinkles, softening of those facial lines and the restoration of volume and
fullness to create a more youthful appearance can be achieved surgically
with injectable fillers. Soft tissue augmentation won’t stop the ageing
process, the results are temporary. If you want to change the elements of
your face, surgery may be the answer. Common sites for cheaper tissue
fillers are the nasalobial folds marionette lines or to enhance the fullness
of the cheeks. |

Reasons for Cosmetic
Fillers are; |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• To give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
The best candidates for cosmetic fillers are those who:
• Are physically healthy and psychologically stable
• Have a positive outlook and have realistic expectations
• Don’t smoke
• Wish to enhance shallow contours
• Want plump thin lips
• Want to soften facial creases and wrinkles
• Wish to improve the appearance of recessed scars
• Want to look younger and more refreshed
• Want to enhance their appearance but may not be ready for a facelift
There are different types of fillers including Collagen, Restylane,
Hyaluronic Acid, Hydroxylapatite, and Human Fat
Collagen
Collagen is a natural protein that supports the skin. Injectable collagen
formulas derived from human dermis include Cosmoderm or Cosmoplastt. Syderm
and Syplast are forms of bovine
collagen that, unlike human derived collagen, require prior allergy testing.
The results remain visible for three to four months depending on the amount
used and depth of lines or folds.
Restylane
Restylane is a new form of injectable filler that provides advantages over
fat and collagen injections. It is a non-animal, biodegradable gel based on
hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in most of our bodies
as it provides volume and fullness to the skin. Restylane has been proven to
last longer than fat and collagen injections. It maintains its shape using
the body’s own moisture. What results is a longer-lasting, youthful facial
appearance.
Restylane can be used to either shape facial contours, smooth wrinkles, or
sculpt lips. What results is a healthy, more youthful, and fuller appearance.
This has grown in popularity. Since 1996, over a million individuals have
received Restylane injections worldwide
Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic Acid is a natural substance found in our bodies. It is well
suited to plump thin lips and fill facial creases such as nasolabial folds.
It may also be appropriate for some surface wrinkles and concave scars. The
results may last 6 months or longer.
Hydroxylapatite
Hydroxylapatite is a mineral-like compound naturally in human bones,
suspended in a gel-like formulation. It is the heaviest of facial fillers
and is recommended to fill deeper creases such as nasolabial folds,
marionette lines and frown lines, as well as to enhance fullness of the
cheeks and other facial contours.
Human Fat
Human fat, harvested from you own body, can be reinjected to enhance facial
fullness, fill deep creases and to build up shallow contours. Fat injection
requires a more extensive procedure than other injectable fillers because it
uses liposuction techniques to extract the fat prior to injection.
Treatment results last up to 1 year or more in some cases and are highly
variable. (Fat can be stored for your own future treatment. The duration of
results from preserved fat is not as favourable as fat used at the same time
it is harvested.) |

Pre-visit and during consultations the
surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical
conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are
honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are
taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if
you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. the surgeon is
here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed,
possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and
limitations of each as well as details of follow up and after care. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
The surgeon will examine the areas of your
face to be augmented with injectable fillers. Strategic points on your face
may be marked as guides to the appropriate injection sites for the filler.
The injection sites will be cleansed with an antibacterial agent, a numbing
cream or an ice pack may be applied before injection to numb the area. In
some cases the filler itself will contain an anaesthetic agent. In other
cases, possibly during lip sculpting local anaesthetic may be administered
to the treatment site. The treatment can take anything from a few minutes to
an hour depending on the size of the area to be treated.
Injection takes only a few moments per site and a few more minutes for a
course of treatment. An improved appearance is visible almost immediately,
although minor swelling or bruising may appear at the injection site. This
will disappear over the following days An icepack may be applied after
injections to reduce any swelling or bruising. Make up may be reapplied
within the hour so long as care is taken not to apply pressure to the
treatment area.
Filling wrinkles or recessed scars involves multiple injections. In some
cases where deeper injection of fillers is required, a local anaesthetic may
be used prior to treatment.
Results of cosmetic fillers are not permanent and they are eventually
absorbed by the body and the continual ageing of the face and variables in
the absorption of fillers will affect how long the results last. Should you
decide not to repeat the treatment your appearance will return to its
original condition. Plumped lips will lose volume and improved wrinkles,
creases and scars will visibly recess and fully reappear in time and need
frequent repeat injections to maintain correction.
Soft tissue augmentation of the lips requires multiple injections to
distribute the filler for enhanced lip fullness and to raise or define a
cupids bow or vermillion (the red pigment of your lips) border.
Post Operative
Following injection, any markings will be cleansed and ice may be offered to
alleviate any discomfort. Make-up may be carefully re-applied so long as
care is taken not to apply pressure to the treatment area.
Areas may be red and swollen but should only last one or two days.
An improved appearance is visible almost immediately in nasolabial folds,
although minor swelling or bruising may appear at the injection sites. With
some fillers, a slightly “over-filled” appearance may be initially present.
These conditions will resolve within a few hours, or at most a few days. The
duration may be as long as a few weeks with injection of one’s own harvested
fat.
Treatment results remain visible for between six to nine months depending on
the area injected, the amount injected and what product was used. Patients
can choose to undergo another treatment twice a year.
Radiesse
Radiesse (formerly marketed as Radiance) is a cosmetic dermal filler that is
used to diminish the appearance of wrinkles, lines and facial folds. In
addition to the long-lasting results it provides as a cosmetic filler,
Radiesse is also FDA-approved in the United States to treat oral and
maxillofacial defects, coval cord deficiencies and is used in the treatment
of facial lipoatrophy (facial wasting) in patients with the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Radiesse (or Radiance) is a next-generation cosmetic filler used in the
treatment of deep lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth – including
smile, marionette lines and nasolabial folds. Radiesse cosmetic filler has
small microspheres (particles) suspended in a gel-like solution. There is no
need for an allergy test prior to Radiesse filler injections since the
microspheres are comprised of calcium hydroxylapatite, a substance naturally
found in the body.
For the first three months after Radiesse treatment, it acts as a cosmetic
filler, plumping up the skin and diminishing age lines. Then, Radiesse
microspheres stimulate natural collagen growth, actually causing new tissue
development for extended results (up to two years). In addition, Radiesse is
useful in the treatment of facial lipoatrophy (a stigmatizing effect of HIV),
vocal cord deficiencies, oral and maxillofacial defects, as well as scars
and chin dimples.
The best candidates for Radiesse are patients showing obvious signs of
facial aging. Many people seek treatment for prominent smile lines,
marionette lines and other facial wrinkles. Because Radiesse cosmetic filler
is made of a natural substance that occurs in the body, no allergy testing
is needed.
The Procedure
The Radiesse treatment process is a simple procedure generally performed
using a local anaesthetic. Treatment time takes up to 15 minutes, depending
upon the extent of the treatment. The doctor selects one or more injection
points for each location to be treated. Local anaesthesia and an antiseptic
are applied. The cosmetic filler is then injected beneath the skin, under
the dermis and subcutis layer. Although patients should see immediate
results, the final product is evident within one week. Results last up to 2
years.
ArteFill
ArteFill is also another cosmetic filler that is similar to Radiesse in that
the unique PMMA microspheres in Artefill are not absorbed by the body and
provide the permanent support your skin needs for long-lasting wrinkle
correction.
If you are looking for a procedure to give you smooth , healthy, more
youthful and fuller appearance then injectable fillers are the answer. Most
patients are more than happy with the end results and often repeat the
process. |

Risks and complications of Cosmetic
Fillers
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery.
Complications from fillers are uncommon but as with any procedures there can
be side effects.
• Mild swelling or bruising
• Temporary numbness or redness
• An overfilled appearance to treated areas. These conditions can be
alleviated by the application of an ice pack and will improve within a
matter of hours or just a few days.
• Fillers derived from non-human sources may require a pre-treatment allergy
test
• Infection at the injection site
• Fillers that are not completely fluid and contain microscopic granular
substances carry a risk of “clumping” as a result of facial movement and the
natural aging process. Over time, these can result in lumps of nodules that
may require surgery to treat.
• Acne-like skin eruptions
• Antibodies to filler material may reduce the effectiveness of future
injections
• Asymmetry
• Mild bruising, swelling or bleeding
• Filler material may migrate from the original site and produce temporary
paralysis of other muscle groups or other unintended effects
• Skin might die (skin necrosis)
• Skin rash, itching and swelling
• Skin redness
• Skin sensitivity
• Under or over correction of wrinkles
