The body is the most important attribute of
female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Today women who are
unhappy with their body have many options which include fat transfer.
As a person ages fat is lost where it actually served a purpose, the soft
tissue in the facial skin begins to sag. That sagging shows the effect of a
number of different factors: gravity, exposure to the sun and repeated
movement of the underlying muscles. Such sagging can be eliminated by the
inserting a filler under the skin. |

Reasons for having Fat
Transfer Surgery include |
 |
|
| |
|
• To increase self confidence and enhance
self image
• To give a more youthful appearance in a natural way
• To restore a smoother firmer image
• To improve self esteem
• To enhance and give more fullness to the lips and cheeks
• To fill in deep wrinkles
• fill scars or tissue defects like that created by severe acne
The most suitable candidates for fat transfer procedures are those who are
in good physical health, are mentally and psychologically stable, preferably
do not smoke, those who want to improve their appearance and those who have
realistic expectations about the procedure and the results. Extra reasons
may include those who wish to eradicate the signs of ageing in hollows and
furrows by increasing the volume in these areas
Advantages of fat transfer
• Allergic reactions to the fat cannot occur
• It is readily available
• No foreign matter is injected
• Infection is rare
• The results can last for years
All injectable substances like fat and collagen will reabsorb to some extent.
Fat has a variable retention rate meaning that some of the observed effect
will be lost. The patient should always be aware that further "top-up"
injections may be required to achieve the desired result.

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
The transfer of fat has been extensively
employed for many years to fill out a variety of contour defects on the
surface of the body. Fat transfer involves transplanting cells (containing
the fat) extracted by a syringe under local anaesthetic from your hips,
abdomen, tummy, thighs or wherever there is some. It is then cleansed and
reinjected into facial folds, creases, lips or hollows. This is a 2 stage
procedure in which fat is harvested then injected. The redundant fat is
stored for subsequent top-up injections because some will be absorbed into
the body and top-ups may be required and is regarded as a type of graft. In
their new position the fat cells continue as before to absorb and store fat.
Fat transfer is especially useful in correcting facial defects from whatever
cause. The abundant blood supply of the face makes it an ideal area to
support and maintain the viability – the ability to continue to live and
thrive – of free transplanted fat cells. In addition, as they are the body’s
own tissue, there is no danger of rejection. Fat can serve as soft tissue
filler. Fat injections can restore smoothness to an aging face. Sutures are
not required because the incisions are so small. |

After Surgery and Recovery |

A surgeon can not predict how long any
injected fat will remain under a patient's skin, before becoming absorbed by
the cells that are in contact with that fat. Five different elements
contribute to the "staying power" of any injected fat. Those five elements
are the patient's age, the patient's genes, the patient's skin quality, the
patient's lifestyle and the site of the fat injection.
About two thirds of the transplanted fat will be absorbed soon after
transfer and within about six weeks of the procedure. Some will be absorbed
at a later stage, while the remainder will ‘take’ and continue to thrive as
normal living tissue. It is not possible, however, to predict accurately how
much fat will ‘take’, and a second procedure is sometimes required within a
few weeks.
Because only a small proportion of the volume of the transplanted fat is
going to last more than a few weeks, it is customary to inject rather more
than is actually required. If the surgeon tries to be over-ambitious with
this technique the result tends to be disappointing because large volumes of
fat cells do not establish an adequate blood supply and so perish. The
correct techniques is to inject only small amounts at a time.
Expect swelling and redness for several days and bruising is also likely
since there is more trauma with ft transfer than with other cosmetic fillers.
The stable result, seen after six weeks or so, can last for several years. |

Risks and Complications of
Fat Transfer
When fat injections are performed by a properly qualified and trained doctor
in an appropriate medical setting, treatment is safe.
Risks include hematoma or blood pooling beneath the skin. Although rare,
infection and necrosis or skin loss is possible. Fatty nodules or bumps
beneath the skin are also possible. An unsatisfactory outcome is also a
risk.
If you don’t like the results, they may diminish over time. The only way to
extract fat that has been injected is through liposuction surgery.
Depression can often occur following cosmetic surgery. There are several
factors that contribute to post operative depression, including:
• The anticipation and stress of preparing for surgery can have a rebound
effect
• The medications, anaesthesia and trauma of the surgery have physical
effects that will affect your emotional well-being
• Stress and fear regarding complications and disfigurement
• Refraining from exercise can make you feel tired, blue, and out of sorts
• Adjusting to your new look
• Dealing with family and friends reactions to your surgery
• Financial stress
• Feeling guilty
Expecting to feel a bit down and accepting it as normal will help you get
back to normal sooner. Take time to relax, meditate and care for yourself.
It is also important to have support from others. Be sure to ask for help
from others. You can also find support online with other people who have had
the same procedure and may have similar experiences.
