The face is one of the most important attributes of female beauty – a symbol of attractiveness and desire. Many women are not completely happy with the size and shape of their chin and today women who are unhappy with their chin have many options which include Chin Augmentation.
Through the ages strong chins have been considered signs of beauty. Chin augmentation is a surgery sought after by men and women alike but is not carried out until the development of the bone itself is complete. Surgery is usually carried out to augment a weak chin or to balance, improve and enhance facial contours such as a prominent nose. Chin implants can greatly improve the profile of a person by making noses and over/bites appear smaller and leave the face better proportioned giving an overall balanced effect. A jutting out chin can be reduced by removing some of the chin bone while a recessive chin can be built out
Facial implants have proven to provide a safe, predictable, low-risk cosmetic surgical procedure. Facial implants made from non-toxic materials such as expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) and silicone and have been implanted with no reported cases of allergic reaction , there is no scientific evidence to show that this is a harmful substance. The implants, designed specifically for use in the chin come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The implants are custom-trimmed by your surgeon for a more natural fit and when positioned and inserted look and feel like normal bone so no one can tell the difference.

Reasons for having Chin Augmentation  Surgery include

• to increase self confidence and enhance self image
• to give a more youthful appearance in natural way
• to help achieve balance between chin, mid face and upper face
• to help the face to look better proportioned
• to strengthen a profile by making a weak chin more prominent
• to decrease the image of a rounded face and neck
• to correct a heredity disorder or a damaged chin caused by injury or other

The best candidates for chin augmentation are those who are in good physical health, are mentally and psychologically stable, preferably do not smoke, those who want to improve their appearance and those who have realistic expectations about the procedure and the results. Extra reasons may include:

• have a receding chin/weak chin
• have a chin that looks too small in comparison to the other facial features
• want to improve their neckline by making the nose seem smaller, this will help to balance the facial features over the neckline
• want to restore a more youthful appearance by filling out a face that appears “sunken” or “tired”

  Planning

Pre-visit and during consultations the surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. the surgeon is here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed, possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and limitations of each as well as details of follow up and after care.

The Procedure

There are 2 places for an incision to be made, the surgeon will decide which is best depending on the surgery. A small incision can be made inside the mouth which leaves no visible scarring (along the lower lip) or in the skin just under the chin area. The implant of the size and shape selected will then be inserted into a pocket directly over the front of the jawbone. Usually the chin is taped after surgery to minimize swelling and discomfort. Sutures in the skin will be removed in 5-7 days. If an intra-oral incision is used the sutures will dissolve.

  After Surgery and Recovery

There will be some swelling peaking up to 48 hours after surgery but this will subside over a few days but prolonged swelling may prevent the final facial contour from becoming apparent for several months. It is normal to experience numbness after surgery which will disappear after a few days and slight swelling and bruising for up to 2 weeks after surgery. Normal activity such as talking, yawning, smiling and eating may be uncomfortable also during this time. Dental and oral hygiene procedures after surgery will be advised by your surgeon. Most people are able to go back to work within a week of surgery however 1-2 weeks off may be recommended. A soft diet is recommended for about a week and strenuous activity should be avoided for up to 2 weeks especially if it may result in the face being jarred or bumped. Makeup can be worn within 10 days.

Although you will be able to get an idea of the final new look after a couple of weeks it may take months to achieve the desired look but the results are long lasting and many people won’t recognise that you’ve had implant surgery – only that you look better. Results are permanent – however an implant may shift over time or need to be exchanged or removed.

If you are looking for a procedure that will give you a more vibrant and attractive look of distinction then maybe Chin surgery will be for you.
