The
breast is one of the most important attributes of a female body however
many women are not totally happy with enlarged areola which can be
unflattering as it may take up a large area of the frontal breast surface.
The areola may appear too large / puffy / bulging for the breast due to
normal or abnormal development, also after giving birth or breast feeding
the areola can darken and enlargen.Weight gain can cause the breast size to
increase and the areola to expand or in the opposite situation after weight
loss the breasts may decrease in size but the enlarged areola will remain.
Reasons for having areola reduction:
● To increase self confidence and enhance self image.
● To correct an inbalance of breast proportions that include the areola.
● To increase satisfaction in the appearance of the breasts |

The best candidates for areola reduction are
those who are in good physical health, are mentally and physically stable,
preferably do not smoke and have realistic expectation about the procedure
and the results. Extra reasons may include those who want to increase the
apperance of their breast area. For the average sized breast (B & C cup) the
desirable areola diameter is 4-5cms to be proportional. Smaller breasts look
better with smaller areolas and vice versa. |

Planning |

Pre-visit and during consultations the
surgeon will try to evaluate your physical-mental health and any medical
conditions. In order to obtain the best results it is important that you are
honest with the surgeon, that you advise any previous surgeries, if you are
taking any medications, herbal supplements, vitamins or other drugs and if
you smoke. Be sure to discuss your expectations and goals. The surgeon is
here to guide, advise and explain to you how the surgery will be performed,
possible alternatives that may offer better results, the risks and
limitations of each as well as detailsof follow up and after care. |

The Procedure
|
 |
|
| |
|
Areola reduction is designed to reduce and
remove the excess pigmented area (areola tissue) around the nipple and
improve the overall appearance of the areola often called a modified
mastopexy, donut mastopexy, Benelli lift or perio repair lift often results
in a lifting appearance of the breasts. The surgeon either will make an
incision around the outside of the areole and a smaller incision closer to
the nipple and remove the excess tissue in between like a doughnut' or make
an incision around the base of the nipple. Very large areolas may involve a
vertical incision fromthe nipple as well as around the nipple and is then
closed in the shape of a lollypop. Occasionally skin is removed at the very
base of the nipple rather than at the circumference of the areola, this will
depend on individual breasts and their characteristics. The two remaining
edges will then be drawn together and sewn into place resulting in the
smaller areola. |

After Surgery and Recovery |
 |
|
| |
|
Usually disolvable stitches are placed under
the skin which helps to minimise scarring, if other stitches are used then
these are removed within 7 days. Eventually scars shold be virtually
invisible as they will have been placed at the outer edge of the newly
shaped and sized areola. It is normal to shower the day after surgery and
normal activities can be resumed after a week. You should expect to be off
work for up to 5 days.
Areola reduction can be performed in conjunction with other breast surgery,
breast lift, reduction and augmentation.
Risks and complications associated with areola reduction:
Surgery is a serious business and not a decision to be taken lightly. There
is always the possibility that something may go wrong. No absolute
guarantees can be given. The surgeon will explain to you procedure, the
risks; alternatives and potential complications in detail so that you
understand what could go wrong.
Complications of areola surgery are infrequent and normall minor, to reduce
the risks the surgeons instructions should be followed closely both before
and after surgery.
Several complications may include:
Loss of or change in sensitivity in the areola or nipple.
Irregular shape – as the muscles contract after surgery it may result in
areole too large or too small if you were not realistic in your expectations,
this could result in the final appearance being different to what you wanted.
Loss of skin pigmentation resulting in lightened areas of the skin from
scars, this can be counter effected by tattooing pigment into the lightened
areas and blending them into the surrounding tissue. (To be completed by a
micropigmentation tatooist who is experienced in tatooing scar tissue).
It is very important that you follow the surgeons aftercare advice as this
is given to your for your benefit and will give you every chance of a speedy
and problem free recovery. |
